Snap Sights Sports Utility Camera w/ Flash SS01
Date Published: 4/13/06
The basic, fixed focus, point-and-shoot Snap Sights Sports Utility Camera w/ Flash SS01 comes with a nice removable underwater housing. This camera can be used for simple underwater photography at depths down to 100 feet or for general photos anywhere.
This model is an improved version of the Snap Sights Sports Flash and comes preloaded with fast ISO 800 color print film and a battery, so it's ready to use after the film is advanced to frame number one. The camera is completely manual in operation with a ratchet film advance wheel on the back behind the shutter release. To switch on the built-in flash, a button on the front must be depressed. This camera can be loaded with fresh film and reused.
The transparent underwater housing is removed by turning a large knurled knob on the end, which has a safety latch to prevent accidental opening. It is easy to open to take out or reinsert the camera. The shutter release and winding knob are also easy to operate; they work by the extensions protruding from the housing.
When in the housing this camera will float if placed in water. A knob on the front is used to switch on the flash or deactivate it. There is a pop-up sports finder that allows for easier viewing if you are wearing underwater goggles. After manually rewinding the film, the rewind knob must be pulled out to release the film cassette. The rewind button was a bit difficult to pull out on the first roll of film we tested. Test pictures made outdoors in bright light and indoors with the built-in flash were quite sharp in detail, and the flash exposures were good. This model has an extremely short flash range with ISO 100 film, but an acceptable 3.9-to-11-foot range with ISO 400 film.
