Skype 2.5

Date Published: 12/13/06

Skype 2.5 is VoIP (Voice over IP) software that is free, easy to use, and works with all major operating systems (Macintosh, Windows, Linux and Pocket PC). It doesn't get much better than that. The only catch is that you will need a headset (preferably noise-canceling, for best results), or a set of headphones and a microphone to place and receive calls.

Actually, there's one other catch. Unlike a regular telephone call, which you can place any time, whether the other party is there or not, you can only successfully place a call using Skype if the recipient also uses Skype, has their computer turned on, and has Skype running. Still, for a free service, that's not a lot to ask.

With that little exception, you can call anyone, anytime, anywhere, for free, even if you're on opposite sides of the world.

If you're familiar with instant messaging software, you'll find that Skype has a similar look and feel, partly because it doubles as instant messaging software. The main screen shows a list of contacts, and indicates whether or not each individual is currently online. Placing a call is as easy as selecting the name of a contact who is online and clicking the big green call button.

The Call List screen keeps track of everyone you have talked to recently and notes how long you talked with each person.

The Chat feature looks and works much the same as any other instant messaging software. You can chat with one person, or up to 48 other people, if you're feeling particularly masochistic.

If you need to exchange files with a colleague, you can send the files via a phone call or via chat.

In addition to the free service, Skype also offers for-fee services, including SkypeOut, which lets you use Skype to place a call to a landline or mobile phone.

Skype 2.5 is free VoIP software that is so easy to use that even computer novices can make Internet phone calls in a matter of minutes.
