Skil 9290-01 Grinder
Date Published: 2/26/07
A good choice for grinding, sharpening and sanding, the corded Skil 9290-01 grinder is a versatile and inexpensive -- although less than top power -- addition to just about any workshop.
The guard can be easily adjusted for quick angle changes without tools. Its 4.5-inch wheel is on par with other grinders on the market, but its 6-amp motor is a little slight. Some other models in the same price range feature 6.5-amp or 7-amp motors, and for another 30 to 50 bucks, they move into the 8.5- or even 9.5-amp range. The grinder has a comfortable soft-grip side assist handle, which makes it easy to use for long periods of time. And the spindle lock lets you change the wheel quickly.
At less than $40, the low-price Skil 9290-01 grinder provides only a moderate amount of power, but more than enough versatility, ease of use, and durability to make it a worthwhile option, whether you're removing paint or rust from metal or sharpening a lawn mower blade. It comes with a 2-year warranty.
Pros: Low cost
Cons: Moderate power
