Skil 2410-01 cordless drill/driver
Date Published: 7/10/07
Skil's 2410-01 10.8-volt cordless drill/driver is a handy tool to have in your tool box and around the house. You might not expect a 10.8-volt drill to offer much in the way of power or performance. But the 2410-01 is lightweight (1.8 pounds) and easy to grip, and its lithium-ion battery gives it an amazing amount of power for its small size. That's a great feature for a drill priced at $80, especially when it delivers twice the performance at half the weight.
Another welcome feature is the 2410-01's charger cradle, which can also be used as a convenient storage station after the drill has finished charging. Since the built-in battery keeps its charge for up to 18 months of inactivity, the drill is always ready to go. The only downside is that the charger needs approximately 5 hours to fully charge a battery.
The 2410-01 sports an impressive quick-change chuck, so swapping bits is a breeze. Pull the locking sleeve forward, insert the bit into the chuck and release the locking sleeve. It's that easy. However, the 1/4-inch chuck is better suited to lightweight applications. Other features we like include the built-in work light, forward and reverse LED indicators and a drill-located battery-level meter with three indicator lights (green, yellow and red), so you always know the battery's charge level.
The electronic clutch has ten torque settings, and you can adjust it via a plastic dial located on the 2410-01's base. The numberless dial is somewhat unconventional, but it nevertheless delivers the right amount of power for drilling or driving. One negative is the lack of an automatic brake, so the chuck does not quickly stop after the trigger is released.
The 2410-01 comes with a 14-piece bit set, a lithium-ion battery and the cradle charger, all of which fit perfectly in the extremely functional and sturdy carrying bag. Whether installing kitchen cabinets, hanging drywall, assembling furniture or building a small deck, the Skil 2410-01 10.8-volt cordless drill/driver is a compact powerhouse that gets the job done.
Pros: Lithium-ion battery in a relatively inexpensive drill, lightweight design with comfortable grip, quick-change chuck, charge cradle doubles as a storage station, built-in work light and battery-charge indicator, sturdy carrying case
