Skil 18-Volt Cordless Drill/Driver 2815-02

Date Published: 6/24/08

Compact, lightweight and ever so reliable, the Skil 18-Volt Cordless Drill/Driver 2815-02 is packed with several impressive features for its less than $100 price tag. Leading the pack is the 18-volt removable lithium-ion battery, which provides the needed power to get the job done right, whether assembling cabinets or building a deck. And the clutch is easily adjustable to one of 16 settings. The motor features a 0-850 no load rpm, and there's an all-metal gearbox to maximize power and extend tool life. Additional features include a 3/8-inch keyless chuck, four-piece accessory bit set and work light to illuminate your work area, onboard battery fuel gauge and a Smartcharge cradle charger that allows you to store the drill on the cradle.

Features aside, we like the lightweight convenience and well-balanced feel of this tool. And the compact design makes it perfect for overhead applications and getting in tight spaces. The customized, ergonomic handle has a grip that even people with small hands could comfortably grab and hold for long periods of time. The variable speed trigger works well and gives you accurate speed control at the touch of the trigger. We also like that you can charge the battery on or off the tool, a convenience that has earned the Skil 2510-02 battery charge the Energy Star Compliance certification. And the battery holds its charge for up to 18 months of non-use.

One failing in an otherwise terrific tool is that we sometimes struggled when it came to removing the battery pack -- which may not be so much of an issue as you can easily charge the battery on the tool. The drill also lacks the convenience of a tool bag. Drawbacks aside, we feel the Skil 18-volt Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver 2815-02 is certainly a contender worth considering.

Pros: Compact and lightweight, 18-volt lithium-ion battery, adjustable clutch, 0-850 no-load rpm, all metal gearbox, 3/8-inch keyless chuck, on-board battery fuel gauge, Smartcharge cradle charger allows you to store drill on the cradle, comfortable grip
Cons: Battery is hard to remove, no tool bag, battery takes 3 - 4 hours to fully recharge
