SIRIUS SUB-X1 Dock & Play Universal Boombox

Date Published: 6/6/08

We like big sound, especially when it's portable big sound. The SUB-X1 Dock & Play Universal Boombox is a step above many other products available to satellite radio enthusiasts. With an integrated subwoofer, this three-way system features a separate tweeter and midrange driver in its integrated speakers. The integrated handle and ability to be powered for 9 hours off of 8 D-cell batteries means that the SUB-X1 is good for day-long trips to the beach or any other outdoor activity you can dream up.

We picked up the SUB-X1 and immediately noticed that it was fairly light, weighing in at just 7.3 pounds--certainly more than most laptops, but not making the unit difficult to maneuver when on the go. The SUB-X1 comes with an AC adapter for home use as well as an indoor/outdoor antenna and docking adapter for use with SIRIUS ST and SV series models.

It's important to note the ease of use for the system itself. The front of the unit gives easy access to the power button, low battery indicator and volume controls. There is a headphone jack and auxiliary input which is selectable via the Source button. On the back of the unit, you can access the cable storage area for the antenna cable, battery compartment, and antenna connection. The actual indoor/outdoor antenna can be placed on the top of the unit when not in use.

The system has excellent fidelity and produces lots of deep bass (though some might say too much). When powered by batteries, the boombox played for over eight hours at moderate levels without interruption. The AC adapter allows for louder play for indefinite periods of time. As with all portable units, we recommend rechargeable batteries, though this typically reduces your play time by up to 20 percent.
The SUB-X1 is truly a robust portable speaker system for SIRIUS radio receivers and fulfills its pledge to be part of the Dock & Play series. The major downsides would have to fall under the finicky reception that satellite radio is plagued with, and the lack of any bass or treble controls to customize the sound. As a speaker system, the SUB-X1 excels--and for the price, it's a great choice for any SIRIUS radio enthusiast.

Pros: Conveniently portable, docks with many SIRIUS receivers
Cons: No FM radio, no EQ or bass/treble controls, finicky reception
