Singer 14SH654 sewing machine
Date Published: 6/2/05
An inexpensive model, the Singer 14SH654 sewing machine opens the door to professional seam finishes and creative serging projects with a minimal investment.
Equipped with a differential feed, the 14SH654 does a fairly good job of keeping upper and lower fabrics from slipping apart. Like most entry-level sergers, this unit uses four threads and can create three-thread overlock stitches.
It buzzes along nicely creating up to 1,300 stitches per minute. Switching from overedging to rolled hemming is quick and easy as no throat plate change is required. A handy free-arm makes it easier to sew around curves and in tight spots.
A versatile machine, the 14SH654 has a built-in movable knife for trimming as you sew. The worktable opens providing easy access to those always-temperamental lower loopers. As with most models of this type, you'll need to use the included tweezers to maneuver threads through them. Both stitch length and width are adjustable, allowing you the freedom to experiment with various fabric weights and textures. Although this model does not have a cover, it offers a convenient carrying handle.
Threading the Singer 14SH654 is fairly easy thanks to color-coding. And unlike some models, this machine works just fine with regular sewing needles.
Pros: Has built-in storage for accessories, has differential feed, and moves from overedging to rolled hem without a plate change
Cons: No dust cover, lower loopers can be a challenge to thread
