Simplicity Regent 18/38 lawn tractor
Date Published: 4/19/07
The Simplicity 18/38 is on the lower end of their Regent series of lawn tractors, but is representative of their other models in the line.
The 18/38 is powered by an 18-hp Kohler Courage single-cylinder two-stroke engine that is adequate for mowing up to about 1-1/2 acres (60,000 square feet). The transmission is hydrostatic (automatic) made by Tuff-Torq, which is found in most lawn tractors. Forward speed tops at 5-1/2 mph and reverse speed is limited to 3 mph, which is plenty fast for most larger residential lawns. Cruise control is standard and is a great feature for large, flat mowing jobs.
The 18/38 makes a 38-inch wide mowing cut, and with a 12-inch turning radius, it can turn tighter than many other lawn tractors; this is due to the front axle design. A nice feature is the anti-scalp system. Most mowers have two or four rollers that keep the mowing deck -- and blades -- level. The 18/38 and other Simplicity Regent models instead have a full set of rollers across the rear of the deck, just as on larger commercial riding mowers. The tread on the 20-inch rear tires helps keep them from tearing up your lawn.
There are two belt-driven cutting blades below the deck. The deck is relatively easy to remove from the tractor so it can be cleaned, the blades can be checked or replaced, and the belt tightened. The release lever is located at the front of the mower and between the two tires.
The adjustable seat on the 18/38 is relatively comfortable with a 15-inch high back. It's not something you want to ride on all day, but it is sufficiently comfortable for the hour or so you'll be on it each week.
Optional attachments include a two- or three-bag rear-mounted grass catcher, a mulch/leaf shredder kit, a dethatcher, a 10-cubic-foot dump cart and a small dozer blade. However, remember that the engine is just 18 hp; if you want to use lots of attachments, consider purchasing a garden tractor.
The other four models in the Simplicity Regent line have more powerful engines and widen the cut up to 50 inches. However, they all look and handle about the same with nearly identical features. If you like the 18/38, take a look at the others; they all range within $900 of this model.
One problem: Simplicity lawn tractor dealers aren't evenly distributed throughout the United States and Canada. In some regions they are easy to find while in others you may have to travel a hundred miles or more to look at available models -- and to take it in for service. That's okay if you find the model you want nearby and know that you can get service support; if not, consider some of the other adequate lawn tractors in this price range.
The Simplicity Regent 18/38 is a good mower with enough features to make it worth the price -- if you can find the one you want nearby.
Pros: Solid design, adequate engine and transmission, tighter turning radius
Cons: Not readily available, some other models have better engines for the price
