Near the high end of lawn tractors is the Simplicity Broadmoor 20/50, and that's reflected in its price. It's much more expensive than you average lawn tractor, but it's also a much more solidly built machine than most other models.

The 20-hp Briggs & Stratton Vangard engine is at the top of the B&S line (Briggs & Stratton owns Simplicity). It's their commercial-grade engine with features designed to keep it running longer than most residential mower engines. It has two cylinders for quieter and more efficient operation, overhead valves (OHV), full lubrication and cast-iron cylinder sleeves for longer life. The engine is air-cooled to reduce the operating temperature and enhance efficiency. The air cleaner has two stages to keep dust and debris from entering the engine. Overall, it's a top-level engine for a residential lawn tractor.

The transmission is a Tuff-Torq K-57 hydrostatic model that's a good match with the high-end engine. Forward speed tops out at 5.8 mph and reverse speed is up to 3.5 mph. The fuel tank holds 4 gallons, which is more than enough for a single mowing session. Cruise control helps make the job easier.

The cutting width on this model is 50 inches (38- and 44-inch Broadmoor models are also available). The 20/50 lawn tractor should be able to cut 2 to 3 acres of lawn in one session. A single Kevlar belt drives the three blades. Cutting height is adjustable from 1-1/4 to 3-3/4 inches. A set of full-width rollers helps keep the mowing deck from digging in and scalping lawn on uneven ground.

The frame of the Broadmoor 20/50 is heavy-duty 10-gauge steel; their Regent line uses thinner 12-gauge steel and some less expensive brands use 13-gauge steel. The front axle is cast iron, which is sturdier than a steel axle. The adjustable seat is 15-inches high and more comfortable than just about any other lawn tractor we have evaluated. There's even a small toolbox behind the seat; for large lawn jobs, the toolbox is a handy place to store a picnic lunch.

This is a very well designed, solidly constructed and powerful lawn tractor that could, with proper maintenance, cut your large lawn for up to two decades. But it costs three times that of a basic lawn tractor. Though it's an excellent machine, we have trouble justifying the much higher price for once-a-week work. If you will be using it to cut larger lawns or for other tasks, the price may be worth it. Take a close look at your needs, your budget and what you expect to do with your lawn tractor. Maybe the answer for you is the top-of-the-line Simplicity Broadmoor 20/50.
