Sigma Macro EM-140DG macro ring flash
Date Published: 6/19/06
The multifunctional Sigma Macro EM-140DG macro ring flash is fully dedicated for automatic operation with most brands of cameras and is designed to work with digital SLR cameras in addition to film SLR models.
This type of ring flash that surrounds the camera lens is ideal for photographing small objects with practically shadowless detail, thus it excels for scientific and medical applications in addition to small items. Two flash tubes can be fired simultaneously for smooth, even lighting, or just one tube can be used to create more shadowing and three-dimensional lighting.
The main controller power unit fits onto the camera hot shoe where it connects to the camera's internal electronics for metering and operation. A heavy coil cord runs to the flash unit, which attaches to the threads on the end of the camera lens. Common size 55mm and 58mm rings come with the flash, but adapters for use with lenses from 52mm up to 77mm are available. Two flash tubes plus two modeling lights for focusing and composing are enclosed inside a circular housing that encircles the camera lens.
For our test on a Canon EOS A2, we effortlessly recorded many small objects including jewelry, coins, and postage stamps. The consistently soft, even light was properly exposed each time.
Other advanced features on the Sigma Macro EM-140DG include the capability of using the flash in wireless mode, high-speed synchro mode for use with faster-than-normal shutter speeds, and seven power level options.
