Sharp UX-B800SE
Date Published: 3/14/07
Sharp's UX-B800SE desktop fax machine offers an interesting mixture of features, including an Ethernet connection that makes it possible to send PDF scans of your e-mail messages as fax messages. It would be nice if the UX-B800SE contained more unique features to go with its Ethernet capabilities, but this unit contains poorer features than we'd like to see in this price range.
The UX-B800SE can transfer faxes to e-mail and vice versa without the need for a computer, thanks to the unit's QWERTY keypad. (Although it can be a little difficult to type long messages on the unit's 40-character LCD.) All of these features can make the UX-B800SE a little more difficult to use than a typical desktop fax machine, but it will be worth the effort for the office setting that needs these unique features.
For those who often send multi-page faxes, the UX-B800SE includes a 20-page automatic document feeder. Another handy feature is the fax machine's inkjet printing technology, which means you can easily use the UX-B800SE as a makeshift copier on occasion.
Unfortunately, the machine's transmission speeds are only average, topping out at 10 pages per minute. Another drawback to the UX-B800SE is Sharp's 90-day warranty, which is among the shortest warranty periods you'll find for a desktop fax machine.
We'd like to see the UX-B800SE have more memory available; its 2 MB of memory can only store about 100 pages, which may not be enough for a busy office setting. However, this its 200-sheet paper tray means you will not run out of paper very often.
Finally, the UX-B800SE is a small machine that includes a telephone handset, meaning you'll save space on your desk. The best advice for those seriously considering the UX-B800SE: Look closely at its feature set and make sure this unit's strengths match closely with your primary needs. Then determine whether you can live with its below-average features.
Pros: Ethernet connection allows e-mail to fax conversion, 200-sheet paper tray, small unit
Cons: Short warranty period, could use more memory, some aspects of this unit are tricky to learn and use

90-day limited
