Sharp LC-20B8U-S 20-Inch LCD TV

Date Published: 2/21/08

The LC-20B8U-S is a relatively low-end member of Sharp's AQUOS line of LCD TVs, but this 20-inch set is not without its charms. The LC-20B8U-S includes the odd cabinet design common to smaller AQUOS sets, with very wide flanking speakers. You are likely to either love it or hate it, so take a good long look before making your decision.

Whatever you think of the speakers, the LC-20B8U-S is a capable TV that, thanks to a rear-panel PC input, can serve as a computer monitor as well. This set is HD-ready, although an external tuner is required to view HD programming. All content is displayed at the LC-20B8U-S's native resolution of 1,024X768, but considering the screen's standard 4:3 aspect ratio and pixel count, this TV isn't well suited for high-definition content. However, the picture looks sharp and bright regardless of the source, and the LC-20B8U-S does a fine job displaying DVD and video games.

The LC-20B8U-S's audio system is not especially strong, with only 2.1 watts of output per channel. Unlike some competing models, the LC-20B8U-S lacks audio presets, and there are no enhanced features like simulated surround sound or volume leveling.

The video presentation can be quickly switched to any of five presets, and there is also a handy picture-flip option for unconventional installation situations. Other useful features include a game mode, V-chip controls and a sleep timer. The rear-panel jack pack provides an RF input, a composite video/S-video input, a composite video input that can also serve as an output, two component video inputs and the PC input. There are no HDMI or DVI inputs, as well as no digital audio outputs.

If the wide speaker design appeals to you, the Sharp LC-20B8U-S makes for a basic but functional LCD TV purchase.

Pros: Sharp picture, PC input, HD-ready, speaker design may be a positive
Cons: Standard aspect ratio and pixel count not ideal for HD, relatively short on features, poor audio performance, speaker design may be a negative, expensive for the features offered
