Sharp LC-15B8U-S 15-Inch LCD TV
Date Published: 10/26/07
Sharp's highly regarded AQUOS LCD TV line stretches from a 65-inch, feature-laden behemoth to small, basic models like the 15-inch LC-15B8U-S. This flat-panel TV isn't for everyone, but if you need a compact set for the kitchen or a bedroom, the LC-15B8U-S is worth a look.
The first thing you'll notice with the LC-15B8U-S is the flanking stereo speakers, which give the cabinet a much broader width than you'd expect from the screen size. The design drew a variety of responses from our staff, ranging from cheerily positive to downright negative, so consider the LC-15B8U-S's appearance before deciding to buy. The audio output is somewhat limited at 2.1 watts per channel, but that should be sufficient for a TV of this size.
With an external HD tuner, the LC-15B8U-S can display high-definition television, although it is presented at the ED (enhanced-definition) level of 480p. However, the screen's small size (which actually measures 15-1/16 inches diagonally) and standard-definition 4:3 aspect ratio make the LC-15B8U-S an unimpressive choice for HD viewing. On the other hand, this set does a good job showing standard TV, and video games and DVD look great.
The sleek silver-and-black cabinet is stylish, provided you are comfortable with the speaker design. Control buttons are lined across the top of the monitor, and a headphone jack is present on the front panel. The included pedestal stand is detachable if you want to mount the LC-15B8U-S on the wall. The spatula-shaped remote control is not a universal model, but it is uncomplicated and easy to operate.
Sharp includes some innovative features on the LC-15B8U-S, such as a picture-flip function for unusual installations. More conventional convenience features include five video presets for different types of content and a sleep timer. The connection selection is sparse, with an RF input, a component video input, an S-video input and a pair of composite video inputs.
The Sharp LC-15B8U-S combines a distinctive style, a competent picture and some useful features to create an affordable and functional LCD TV.
