Sharp CV-P12LX air conditioner
Date Published: 5/16/08
The Sharp CV-P12LX is a portable air conditioner that cools rooms up to 470 square feet. Unlike other portable air conditioners designed for installation in a wall or window, this model sits on casters. It can be rolled from room to room to give a shot of chilled air nearly anywhere in a home near a window for venting of the hot air. (A flexible exhaust hose and window adapter kit are included.)
We particularly like the fact that the Sharp CV-P12LX pulls double-duty as a dehumidifier. It can take a considerable amount of moisture out of the air. According to the manufacturer, this model can remove up to 65 pints of moisture out of the air in a single day. We were, of course, curious to give this claim a run for its money, but didn't collect as much as the manufacturer's claim. This could be due to the pre-existing moisture levels (or lack of moisture levels) in our test room. Although we didn't quite get the same results, we were still pleased with this model's dehumidifying performance. Plus, there is no drip pan to empty, so that saves us the daily hassle of maintenance. The air conditioner has two removable filters that will need regular cleaning.
The Sharp CV-P12LX is an 11,500-Btu unit, and we discovered that it quickly cools even sizeable rooms. It has easy-to-use controls and a remote control. We like the remote control because it has an LCD display. Unfortunately, one can't fully access all the features and settings of the air conditioner unless one uses the remote. This can be a hassle, but not a major one. It's worth noting this model has a sleek style we've yet to find in the window-mount models. It has a stainless steel/gray pairing that gives it an industrial-chic look.
Overall, we like the Sharp CV-P12LX air conditioner even though it is a bit pricey. It is a strong contender among its class because it cools efficiently and has the added convenience of easily moving from room to room.
Pros: Can be moved from room to room, stainless steel exterior
Cons: Price; must have remote control to fully access features
