Sharp AF-S60FX air conditioner

Date Published: 5/16/08

The Sharp AF-S60FX is a compact air conditioner designed for window installation. It is built to cool rooms up to 250 square feet and has several extra features that make operation simple and convenient. We like the Sharp's remote control, which allows us to adjust the temperature, set the delay timer or change the fan speed, as well as turn the unit on or off.

This model has three cooling speeds and three fan speeds, which is typical for a window air conditioner in this price range. Unlike some models, however, we can adjust the temperature by one degree at a time. This allows us to really pinpoint how cool we'd like a room to become and program the unit to keep the temperature stabilized at this temperature. The electronic control panel on the unit is easy to understand and operate.

We also like this Sharp model's reusable filter. Although this is not a novel feature (most of the Sharp air conditioner's competitors have this type of filter, too), we still like the ability to simply remove and clean the filter rather than having the additional expense of buying replacement filters. It has a built-in dehumidifier to remove excess moisture.

The Sharp AF-S60FX is an Energy Star rated appliance, and we agree that it performs as efficiently as we expected. It cooled a single room within a reasonable amount of time and didn't seem to cycle on more than was necessary to maintain the temperature. It is not a large unit; it weighs about 50 pounds and is about 13 inches high, so it has a relatively unobtrusive presence. At 6,000 Btu, it won't knock your socks off with its cooling power, but it is more than adequate for a single room such as a bedroom. Overall, the AF-S60FX is a solid performer that cools well, is easy to operate and doesn't cost a fortune.

Pros: Price, compact size, one-degree control
Cons: Few extra features

Warranty
1 year, parts and labor (limited); 5 years, sealed cooling system
