Sharp 56DR650 56-inch DLP HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
Sharp's 56DR650 is a 56-inch HDTV that packs top performance and appealing features into a classy cabinet less than 16 inches deep.
Digital light processing (DLP) technology is behind the slim profile and sharp picture on this rear-projection TV, which can also display computer content and deliver picture-in-picture images. The cabinet is silver, with speakers positioned below the wide-format screen.
A triangular table stand provides support for the 56DR650, which has a V-shaped contour along the lower edge that gives the cabinet additional pizzazz. Control buttons are out of view along the right-hand edge, and the side panel offers audio/video and S-video inputs for the quick connection of a video game console or camcorder.
The picture is always in focus with DLP, and there is no concern about image burn-in. Both high-definition and standard analog signals are displayed at 720p with crisp clarity and rich detail. The contrast ratio is an impressive 1,200:1, so the black areas are deep and rich and colors come through accurately. When watching movies, 3:2 pulldown conversion automatically adjusts the speed of the frames to eliminate motion artifacts and ensure smooth action.
The internal speakers produce a total of 30 watts of audio output, which can be set for simulated surround sound, multitrack stereo, and BBE audio. The internal speakers can be used as the center channel in a home theater speaker system, or the audio can be sent to external speakers via the digital or analog audio outputs.
The picture can be formatted four different ways for video content, and twin tuners deliver a choice of PIP and POP options for a second program.
The rear panel contains a full complement of connectivity options, with two RF inputs (one analog and one digital), two audio/video inputs, two S-video inputs, two component video inputs, one RGB input for a PC, one HDMI input for a DVD player or HD source, one center channel input, and two digital audio outputs. The universal remote control provides direct access for up to eight components.
With an HD antenna, the Sharp 56DR650 can display over-the-air HD signals, eliminating the need for an external HD receiver. A separate set-top box is required for cable or satellite reception, as this model does not have a CableCARD slot.
