Schwinn 438

Date Published: 1/29/08

Although it is priced only slightly higher than the entry-level 430, the Schwinn 438 is the top-of-the-range elliptical machine in the company's range. This unit offers a host of features while retaining a reasonable price tag. The Schwinn 438 offers a similar design to the entry-level model; its footprint is a little larger at 66X25 inches, but offers the same front-drive design with moving arms and fixed handlebars. The motion is smooth and relatively quiet, but like the 430, the 438's stride is limited to 18 inches. Where this unit really delivers, however, is in its selection of workout programs; this elliptical offers 21 different workout programs, including four custom, three heart rate control and ten profile workouts, along with time trials, a fitness test and manual options. If you have trouble sticking to a repetitive workout schedule, the Schwinn 438 offers plenty of variety.

In addition to grip sensors built into the handlebars, the 438 also offers a wireless chest strap for hands-free heart rate monitoring while you exercise. The capability to store four separate user profiles means that four members of your family can store and easily access their workout profiles in the 438's onboard console; this is a convenient and accurate way to track your progress and monitor your fitness goals over time. The handlebars offer three different grip positions so everyone can find the position that is most comfortable to them; this is another plus point if you are searching for an elliptical machine that the entire family can enjoy. An aspect of this machine that disappointed us, however, was the comfort of the foot pedals; as with the 430, the 438's footpads lacked sufficient padding.

The Schwinn 438 offers a number of convenience features, including a water bottle holder, transportation wheels and a built-in cooling fan. The console is powered solely via AC power, so you will need to position the elliptical close to a power outlet. Overall, the Schwinn 438 is an inexpensive elliptical machine that packs plenty of features, but if you can spare a little extra money, we'd recommend seeking out a higher-quality machine.

Pros: Inexpensive, 21 workout programs, wireless heart rate monitoring, four user profiles
Cons: Uncomfortable footpads, front drive design

Warranty
15 years, frame; 2 years, parts; 1 year, electronics; 6 months, labor
