Schwinn 430

Date Published: 1/29/08

The Schwinn 430 is the entry-level model in the Schwinn range of budget-priced elliptical machines. This is a compact machine, ideal for those with limited space in an apartment or condo, for example; it has a footprint of just 56X26 inches and sports convenient transportation wheels so you can move it relatively easily to and from a closet or storage space. Unlike previous Schwinn models, however, only an AC adapter -- rather than batteries -- powers the LCD display on the 430, so you will need to ensure the device is located close to a power outlet during use. While you shouldn't expect health club-quality performance from any elliptical machine in this price bracket, the Schwinn 430 is certainly capable of delivering an effective workout.

As is usual with budget-priced machines, the 430's stride length is limited to 18 inches; taller users will likely prefer to have a longer stride. The 430 also features a front-drive design, which is also common in this price range. It delivers a relatively smooth motion, though, and feels sturdy enough during operation. We were a little disappointed in the design of the footplates, which could do with more padding for a more comfortable feel.

The 430 offers 16 resistance levels, eight programmed workouts and three feedback programs, so you can track your progress over time. The quick-start feature enables you to rapidly increase or reduce resistance at the press of a button. The 430 also offers heart rate monitoring via sensors that are integrated into the stationary handlebars. Of course, if you are using the moving arms for a total body workout, obtaining a heart rate reading will mean interrupting your workout for up to a minute; this is a minor inconvenience though.

We appreciate the inclusion of a water bottle holder, and while the LCD display is not backlit, it is still easy enough to read in most lighting situations. While the Schwinn 430 offers decent value for a low-cost elliptical machine, you can obtain a far superior machine in all the areas of construction, features, comfort and performance for a few hundred dollars more and a few extra square feet added to your workout space

Pros: Inexpensive, eight workout programs, quick-start feature, heart rate sensors, compact design
Cons: Uncomfortable foot pads, front-drive design

Warranty
15 years, frame; 2 years, parts; 1 year, electronics; 6 months, labor
