The Sanyo Powerboy Canister Vacuum Cleaner SC-Y130 has a slim, compact design and a number of likeable features. It has an air-driven revolving brush on the nozzle. The nozzle is attached to the canister by a metal wand and flexible hose that is reinforced with interior wire.

The floor nozzle can be used on carpets or bare floors, thanks to a switch located on the handle that stops the brush's rotation. We like the versatility of using the Sanyo Powerboy on carpets or bare floors, but the nozzle is only 10-inches wide. Unless one is using this vacuum in a small space, the nozzle's width is sorely lacking.

The nozzle has an edge-cleaner brush, which is a nice addition. We find this feature works particularly well when vacuuming along baseboards or in corners. There are times, however, when only a crevice tool will do. The Sanyo has an onboard crevice tool that allowed us to vacuum in tight spaces and really deep clean the intersection where baseboard meets carpet, for example. Along with the crevice tool, a round brush also nests aboard the Sanyo Powerboy. Unfortunately, the onboard tools sometimes fall off or get in the way when vacuuming. Plus, we weren't thrilled with the brush tool. It was too bulky for cleaning in tight areas, but it did work adequately on large upholstery cushions. An on-handle slide control allows one to adjust the amount of suction.

The Sanyo PowerBoy Canister Vacuum Cleaner is a lightweight model. The canister weighs only 7 pounds; at times we found it easier to lift and carry the vacuum when cleaning tall spaces, such as ceiling corners, than pull it on the floor. When we weren't toting the canister, we were pleased with its maneuverability. It has large wheels that allow sharp turns. The low-profile design keeps the canister from tipping, but the power cord isn't long enough. At only 18-feet, it barely gives us enough rope to clean a medium-size room.

The Sanyo comes with a reusable cloth bag and disposable paper bags. It's nice to have options, so we were pleased the vacuum was equipped to use both styles of bags -- and that they were included with the original purchase. It also has another unusual feature worth mentioning: The exhaust air vents out both wheels, as well as the rear of the vacuum. While we initially didn't think this would make much of a difference, we discovered the carefully vented exhaust air didn't blow dust and dirt around, as do some other models we've tested. In the end, we find that despite a few flaws -- like poorly located onboard tools and a narrow cleaning path -- the Sanyo Powerboy Canister Vacuum is a good choice for those who live in small spaces or who want a secondary cleaner.
