The TX-S3082WH is a second-generation entry in Samsung's SlimFit series of compact CRT televisions. This 30-inch widescreen HDTV is a more affordable alternative to an LCD set, and it offers many of the same features as its flat-panel cousins.

With its integrated ATSC tuner, the TX-S3082WH can display cable and over-the-air HD content without an external HD tuner. However, this set lacks a QAM tuner or CableCARD slot, so it is not digital cable-ready.

While numerous other television technologies have appeared in recent years, CRT sets still lead the way in image brightness and clarity, and they are unmatched in black levels. This is readily apparent with the TX-S3082WH, which presents a sharp, vivid picture that is able assisted by dynamic black-level expansion and digital signal processing. The screen has up to 800 horizontal scan lines, and all incoming signal formats are scaled to fit the screen. A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter is present to eliminate cross-color interference and keep edges sharp, and three color temperature settings and four video presets let you adjust the picture to your personal preferences.

The TX-S3082WH's audio system offers 10 watts of output per channel, and the speakers' screen-flanking placement produces a nice amount of stereo separation. The usual audio options are present, including simulated surround sound and automatic volume leveling. The TX-S3082WH also has the standard collection of convenience features, such as multiple picture format modes, channel labeling and V-chip controls. The packaged remote control is a universal model with dedicated buttons for operating a DVD player, VCR and cable box.

The TX-S3082WH's connectivity is impressive. For starters, the side panel has a composite video/S-video input for connecting occasional components like a camcorder or game console. The rear panel is home to two RF inputs, another composite video input, two component video inputs and two HDMI inputs, as well as a composite video monitor output.

With its slim design and fine performance, the Samsung TX-SX3082WH is a technologically advanced CRT HDTV that can compete with much more expensive LCD models.
