Samsung TX-S2783 27-Inch Digital TV
Date Published: 10/26/07
The 27-inch TX-S2783 takes Samsung's SlimFit design into the digital realm. This attractive and compact CRT TV has an integrated digital tuner, so it is prepared for the 2009 switch to all-digital broadcasting. However, while it can receive and process 720p and 1,080i high-definition signals, all content is displayed at 480i, so the TX-S2783 isn't an HDTV.
The SlimFit series greatly reduces the cabinet size of CRT TVs, so they are able to fit into spaces traditional tube TVs can't. In addition, with the flat picture tube and flanking stereo speakers, the TX-S2783 looks deceptively like a flat-panel LCD set. A set of composite video/S-video inputs is located on the side panel for the quick connection of a game console or camcorder.
Like other competent CRT televisions, the TX-S2783 features a bright picture with the deep black levels you just won't find on a flat-panel or projection set. Samsung also includes velocity scan modulation to keep edges sharp, but you'll want to turn it off when viewing DVD movies. There are four video presets and three color temperature settings for quick adjustments. Curiously, Samsung only gives the TX-S2783 a basic digital comb filter, as opposed to the more advanced 3-line and 3-D versions found on competing models.
With 14 total watts of output, the internal stereo system provides a clear and effective accompaniment to the video. Audio options include automatic volume leveling and four audio presets. In addition to the more common bass boost, the TX-S2783 sports a treble boost for amplifying dialogue, especially at lower volume levels.
Convenience features include a surf timer that returns you to your original channel after flipping during commercial breaks, a pair of on/off timers and a choice of five picture modes for viewing widescreen content. The TX-S2783 comes with a universal remote that showcases frequently used buttons, but the small button size may prove frustrating until you have the layout memorized in your mind. The connection selection is somewhat limited for a TV of this size, with only an RF input and a component video input on the rear panel, in addition to the side-panel inputs.
With the inevitable switch to all-digital broadcasting on the horizon, the Samsung TX-S2783 proves to be a capable and future-proof TV purchase.
