The Samsung SC-D453 is an ultra-compact version of the SC-D353 MiniDV camcorder. It will comfortably slip into a purse or glove compartment. However, there are tradeoffs when compactness and usability are combined. For example, the SC-D453 offers a less powerful optical zoom than the SC-D353, at only 10X.

Even for such a compact camera, the SC-D453 sits comfortably in the average-size hand, and it isn't so small that the controls are hard to operate. The imaging system includes a 1/6-inch, 680,000-pixel CCD and a digital image stabilization system for eradicating those unintentional camera shakes.

The 2-1/2-inch high-resolution color LCD monitor provides clean images for accurate framing and convenient video playback, even in bright sunlight. The monitor also rotates 210 degrees so users can shoot at multiple angles or even include themselves in the shot.

The SC-D453 offers digital stills capability, saving photos to Memory Stick or tape. Recording stills to tape enables the addition of up to 6 seconds of audio commentary.

In addition, users can capture short movie clips in MPEG4 format that can be easily transferred to a home computer for editing. The SC-D453 has the very useful PictBridge technology that allows the direct connection of the camcorder to any compatible printer via a USB cable. This is a very quick and convenient way of running off prints of favorite stills. The USB connection also enables the camera to double as a webcam or video conferencing tool by simply hooking it up to a PC.
