Samsung ML-2010 laser printer

Date Published: 5/8/08

The ML-2010 is a little short on features, but it's not a bad entry-level laser printer. The compact design will be attractive to home and home office users with limited desktop space, and the price will appeal to anyone on a tight budget.

Like many budget laser printers, the ML-2010 is better at printing text and line art than photos. At the same time, it also requires you to accept some trade-offs. The biggest sacrifice may be the 150-sheet multipurpose paper input tray, which is actually a paper slot rather than a standard cassette. On the plus side, you can remove the paper and fold up the tray when the printer isn't in use. This keeps the tray dust-free and the office (or at least the printer) looking tidy.

Print speeds are a respectable 12 to 16 pages per minute, short of the manufacturer's claim of up to 22 pages per minute, but that's not unusual. The ML-2010 supports effective print resolutions of up to 1,200X600 dpi. Text is relatively crisp, even at small font sizes, and line art is usually smooth and unbroken. Photos and other grayscale images exhibit a bit of graininess and banding, but not enough to be a problem for general-purpose and light business use.

Onboard printer controls are limited but sufficient. Two lights on the top-right front of the ML-2010 show the current printer status, and a button below the lights lets you cancel a print job. A special Toner Save button can help you save up to 40 percent on toner when printing drafts and other non-critical documents.

The ML-2010 can handle the usual paper sizes and stocks, including letter, legal, envelopes, label stock, and transparencies. You can manually feed envelopes and specialty stocks through the printer using the single-sheet manual tray.

The ML-2010 ships with 8MB RAM, which is not upgradeable. There are no options to add paper trays, which makes this laser printer a questionable choice for most business use, other than for a low-volume home office.

Pro: Fast, lightweight, and compact, with a small footprint. Reasonably good output quality. Toner Save feature helps save money on consumables.
Con: Limited paper capacity. Paper input tray isn't a real paper tray. Package doesn't include a USB cable.
