Samsung LN-S2641D 26-Inch LCD HDTV
Date Published: 2/19/08
Samsung packs a lot into the compact LN-S2641D, a 26-inch wide-format LCD HDTV that produces a sharp picture and a host of useful options. If you don't need a large flat-panel set, or if you're looking for a smaller HDTV for a bedroom or study, the LN-S2641D proves to be a smart value.
The LN-S2641D has an integrated ATSC tuner, so you will not need an external receiver to watch over-the-air or cable high-definition content. However, this LCD TV lacks a CableCARD slot or QAM tuner, so it is not digital cable-ready. A selection of PIP options is included, but since it has a single-tuner, the LN-S2641D needs a second video source to enable multiwindow viewing.
The native resolution is 1,366X768, and all incoming signals are scaled to fit the pixels. Black levels and detail in shadow are two picture elements with which LCD TVs often struggle, but the LN-S2641D does a better-than-expected job. Samsung has equipped this set with its Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) image processing, and the result is a clear picture free of artifacts. To adjust the picture to your personal preferences, there are five color temperature choices and four video presets for different types of content.
The speakers are placed on either side of the screen, giving the 5 watts of output per channel decent stereo separation. Control buttons are lined along the side panel, but there are no front- or side-panel inputs for quickly connecting a camcorder or other occasional peripheral. The LN-S2641D comes with a pedestal stand that can be removed for mounting the monitor on the wall with separately available hardware.
Despite the lack of front-panel inputs, the LN-S2641D is still well equipped with connections. The rear panel has two RF inputs, a composite video/S-video input, a component video input, two HDMI inputs, a PC input, optical digital and analog audio outputs and a headphone jack. The remote control is a universal model that has four direct-access buttons for associated components.
For a relatively small LCD HDTV, the Samsung LN-S2641D is an attractive and capable option.
Pros: Good all-around performance, broad connectibility includes PC and two HDMI inputs
