Samsung LN-S2351W 23-Inch LCD TV
Date Published: 10/26/07
Samsung's LN-S2351W is a relatively basic LCD TV that nevertheless delivers a bright picture from an attractive yet streamlined cabinet. This 23-inch set is HD-ready but lacks an integrated ATSC tuner, so you'll need to add an external tuner to view high-definition programming.
All incoming signals are scaled to fit the widescreen LN-S2351W's native resolution of 1,366X768, and the resulting picture is clear and lively. This is in part due to a 4H digital comb filter that keeps edges sharp, and an 8-millisecond response time produces smooth motion in action scenes and sports broadcasts. The LN-S2351W has a dedicated game mode, so your console video games will look great on this TV.
Samsung uses its Dual Acoustic Chamber System (DACS) speaker system on the LN-S2351W, which hides the speakers within the cabinet. Unfortunately, this results in a lackluster sound experience, and the 3 watts of audio per channel is nothing to write home about. However, the game mode includes sound enhancement that considerably improves gaming audio, and simulated surround sound and automatic volume leveling are also available audio options.
All the input and output jacks are located on the rear panel. The selection is diverse but not as extensive as on some comparable LCD TVs, and it includes an RF input, an HDMI digital-to-digital input, a pair of component video inputs and a handy PC input for surfing the internet and playing computer games on your TV screen. The expected convenience features are present, including parental V-chip controls, a sleep timer and a picture freeze. The LN-S2351W also has a host of PIP functions, although a second tuner or video source is needed to enable them.
The face of the LN-S2351W is attractive but rather spartan, with only the power button located on the front panel. Control buttons are lined along the right edge of the frame. The LN-S2351W comes with a pedestal stand that can be detached for mounting the monitor on the wall, although separately available hardware is required. Samsung includes an uncluttered remote control, which is easy to use but not a universal model.
This LCD TV performs well, but you may be disappointed if you are looking for a comprehensive feature list. Overall, the Samsung LN-S2351W is a competent flat-panel set that would be most at home in a bedroom or dorm room.
Pros: Clear picture, attractive cabinet, PC and HDMI inputs
Cons: Relatively basic features, no front-panel inputs, poor audio performance
