Samsung HP-T4264 42-inch Plasma HDTV

Date Published: 3/12/08

Samsung is not a company short on TV models, and their 64 series is a step up from the 54 series. While the sets in each brand are very similar, the 64 series features a few slight improvements that might be worth considering. The Samsung HP-T4264 features a native resolution of 1,024x720 and can handle 720p HD content with ease; 1080i and 1080p source material is scaled accordingly. While HD content from cable and satellite looks very good, this model tackles standard definition just as well. Samsung's DNIe technology further enhances the digital image to generate a crystal-clear picture that captures finite detail on video content. We really liked its performance with deep black levels, thanks in no small part to the 15,000:1 contrast ratio. Additionally, we found the HP-T4264 to have very rich and accurate colors.

However, to get the most out of the picture, you might need to be in a reasonably darkened room. While the set does feature a FilterBright anti-glare technology to enhance the contrast for clearer image details, we did find that ambient light could be a problem. While this remains a problem with many plasma sets, we found the reflections a minor inconvenience at times. The HP-T4264 features a range of picture adjustment options, and the user interface is very straightforward and easy to follow. The set offers a range of presets and picture modes, while allowing specific adjustments of brightness, contrast and color so you can get the best possible picture to meet your room's light conditions.

Burn-in remains a concern with plasma, but we were more than pleased with the options included with the 64 series when it comes to "screen burn protection," which includes a "white" option that fills a screen with a solid white field, while the "scrolling" option essentially scrolls back and forth from black to white to remove any "stuck" images. The set even features an adjustable "pixel shift" to move the image enough to help reduce burn-in, as well as two settings for the side-bars from fullscreen or 4:3 programs.

Visually, the aesthetics of the set are very good. The HP-T4264 has a sleek look, keeping with the rest of the line. The screen blends into the mirrored black bezel as if it was one piece, while the edges taper to add a design element, all of which is very pleasing to the eye. This is one set that looks as good off as on.

We could have hoped for a few more connectivity options with the HP-T4264. This 42-inch set includes just three HDMI inputs, including one on the side. We'd have liked to see a fourth HDMI, but even three for this price category is good. It is just that the side HDMI is still in a hard to reach location (unless you're attaching a camcorder, anyway). The rest of the connection options are about what we'd expect: The set includes two component inputs, an S-Video input, a composite video and a PC input all at the back of the panel. Additionally on the side of the set is a composite and S-Video, as well as a headphone jack. As with other Samsung models we really like the latter inclusion, since there are times after hours when you might appreciate it (or more likely those sleeping will appreciate that you're using it).

For anytime else, you can power up the twin 10-watt speakers. These include SRS TruSurround XT, and while these fail to make the impact of a true multi-channel surround sound system we found these adequate, especially for a den or bedroom setting. The speakers are hidden away at the bottom of the panel, just under the screen. This helps maintain that sleek look. For a main viewing room, we'd still suggest an external audio system.

Overall, the pros certainly out weigh the cons with this sleek 42-inch TV. While we wouldn't recommend it for rooms with vast amounts of ambient light, it does have a great picture, and a price that looks almost as attractive as the sleek design.

Pros: Very good black levels, multiple picture settings, sleek design, swivel stand, three HDMI inputs
Cons: Anti-glare doesn't really reduce ambient light enough
