The Samsung brand name probably doesn't jump to mind when you think of entry-level plasma TVs. But thanks to falling prices, you can actually get quality at a very attractive deal, and the Samsung HP-T4254 42-inch set is just such an example. While it is a step down in resolution from the 50-inch model, this 720p set still has a very good picture.

The set is attractive in an understated sort of way--it's sleek without looking stark. The screen actually blends into the mirror piano black bezel and this gives it a very pleasing appearance. As with the rest of Samsung's plasma line, this set is attractive whether it is off or on.

Of course you'll really appreciate the set in the on position, and this set does an admirable job with HD content. It features a native resolution of 1,024x720 and can handle 720p HD content with ease; 1080i and 1080p source material is scaled accordingly. We were very pleased with the way this set presents standard definition content as well.

Even as a step down model, the HP-T4254 isn't shortchanged on Samsung's picture technology. This model features DNIe technology to enhance the digital image and generate crystal-clear images that capture finite detail on video content. As with Samsung's other plasma sets, this 42-inch model has impressive black levels, as well as reasonably accurate colors. To get the most out of the viewing experience, you can take advantage of the various picture adjustment options, as well as the presets for brightness, contrast and color.

The set does require a bit of a darkened environment to be fully appreciated. While this 42-inch model features the FilterBright anti-glare technology, we found it lacking when compared to step-up models. It does a good job with most ambient light, but you'll still want to draw the curtains during the day.

We were reasonably satisfied with the connectivity options with the HP-T4254. While many step-down models fail to include enough connections, this 42-inch set features three HDMI inputs, including one on the side. Normally we'd complain that this isn't the best location, but for a set in this price range the third input is a great addition. The set also includes two component inputs, an S-Video input, a composite video and a PC input all at the back of the panel. Additionally, on the side of the set is a composite and S-Video, as well as a headphone jack. The inclusion of a headphone jack is never a bad thing, in our book.

Overall, the Samsung HP-T4254 impresses us, especially for the price. We did feel that the built-in speakers are a little underpowered for a 42-inch set, but we feel that way about most 10-watt speakers. Fortunately these support SRS TruSurround XT, which do a reasonable job when simulating surround sound in a bedroom or den. The Samsung HP-T4254 features a good design and offers quite a bit for not a lot of money.
