Samsung HL56A650 56-inch DLP HDTV

Date Published: 6/27/08

If you're considering going a little bigger with your HDTV then rear projection DLP might be worth taking a look at, because the Samsung HL56A650 is a set that will turn heads--both for the picture, and the price. This set from Samsung's new 6 Series provides a lot of picture for a price that would be impossible to match with plasma or LCD.

This 56-inch model is a full HD 1080p set, with a native resolution of 1,920x1,080 that can display every pixel from 1080i and 1080p sources, and up-converts 720p source material accordingly. As with other 6 Series models, this DLP set features multiple picture modes, including a 3-D option which might be more gimmick thanhaving any sort of practicality when viewing. Unlike the new 7 Series models, the HL56A650 uses a traditional multi-chip DLP light engine rather than the newer LED light source. If you can spend a bit more, you might consider a jump to the next level. But that's not to say this isn't a good set for the price.

The Samsung HL56A650 offers a picture that is bright with colors that are both clear and lifelike. The blacks levels are above adequate, especially for a rear projection set this size. Of course, the downside is that today's flat panel models are getting as sleek as a mere inch, making this set feels a little beefy. But at 13-2/5 inches deep, it isn't like the beastly rear projection models of a decade ago. We can say for a set that is 56 inches wide, the HL56A650 really shouldn't overpower most rooms, and the thin bezel design helps make the set appear a bit small from the front.

Samsung has clearly considered the placement of the A/V connections in relation to the design of the set, and placed the inputs and outputs on the side. This set features a total of three HDMI 1.3 inputs--which is still yet another technology that has yet to be fully utilized, but is nice to have nonetheless. The only complaint is that it can make hiding the various cables a bit trickier. In addition to the HDMI, this model features twin component inputs, S-Video and PC (RGB) inputs at the back, as well as side composite and S-Video inputs. A USB input with WiseLink USB 2.0 for playback of photos and MP3 audio tracks is also included.

For audio playback this model features two 10-watt speakers, which support SRS TruSurround XT. While these speakers might be acceptable for the 50-inch model, we do think these are a tad underpowered for the 56-inch set. All things considered, the HL56A650 is a good option for those who want their screens a little bigger without spending a whole lot more.

Pros: Reasonably good black levels, HDMI 1.3, nice design
Cons: HDMI inputs all on the side, 3D technology is gimmicky at best
