Samsung HL50A650 50-inch DLP HDTV
Date Published: 6/27/08The Samsung HL50A650 is among the new 6 Series models, and it features a big 50-inch screen with a picture that is bright with sharp color clarity and reasonably deep black levels. While the black levels have always been an issue with rear-projection sets, we were pleased with what we sae. Unlike the step-up Series 7 models, however, the HL50A650 feature a traditional DLP engine rather than the LED light source, so you might consider making the jump to the next models.
With the falling prices of flat panel plasma and LCD sets it might seem like the day of the rear projection sets, even DLP, would have passed. But Samsung, along with Mitsubishi, clearly sees plenty of reasons to keep introducing new rear-projection models. This year's new 6 Series sets from Samsung provide a bright and clear picture, and offer full 1080p resolution and still have a price that should leave money in the bank--or at least let you fuel up the car for the ride home.
If getting the most bang for the buck is your primary goal, the HL50A650 should leave you quite pleased. This full HD 1080p set features a native resolution of 1,920x1,080 and can thus display every pixel from 1080i and 1080p sources. It up-converts 720p source material accordingly. This DLP set features multiple picture modes, including a 3-D option, though we're still feeling that's more gimmick than an actual practical feature.
The Samsung HL50A650 has plenty of connectivity options, including a total of three HDMI 1.3 inputs--another technology yet to be fully utilized, but nice to have nonetheless. The only complaint about the HDMI inputs is that all three are on the side of the panel rather than the back of the set. This makes it easier to access, in theory, but some users might have to rearrange their components due to their unusual location. In addition to the HDMI, this model features twin component inputs, S-Video and PC (RGB) inputs at the back, as well as side composite and S-Video inputs. The HL50A650 also features a USB input with WiseLink USB 2.0 for playback of photos and MP3 audio tracks.
For audio playback, this model features two 10-watt speakers which support SRS TruSurround XT. The results fail to make the impact of a true multi-channel surround sound system, and for a 50-inch HDTV, you'll likely want to use the savings on a better home theater system.
The HL50A650 is available at a more-than-reasonable price. It isn't as sleek as the latest flat panel displays, but at 13-2/5 inches it isn't a massive behemoth of a TV, either. It provides a large picture at a price that is much smaller, and for that reason alone, it's worth considering if you have an extra foot or so to spare in your viewing room.
Pros: Reasonably deep black levels, HDMI 1.3, nice design
Cons: HDMI inputs all on the side, 3D technology is gimmicky at best
