Samsung HL-R6168W 61-inch DLP HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
Samsung's HL-R6168W is a 61-inch HDTV that employs digital light processing (DLP) technology to achieve a slim profile and relatively light weight while delivering top performance. The floating stand design visually separates the monitor from the silver base that contains stereo speakers. Control buttons are easy to reach but out of sight along the side of the monitor, while easy-access inputs are placed on the reverse side of the front-panel edge.
The picture on the wide-format screen is remarkably lifelike, with bright colors, deep blacks, and impressive detail. Convergence errors and screen burn-in are not an issue with DLP, and cooling fans are unnecessary, so the HL-R6168W operates very quietly. With a native resolution of 1,920X1,080, all content is up-converted to 1,080p, regardless of the source, resulting in a very rich and accurate picture. A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter removes dot crawl and rainbow effects. Film content is adapted for video viewing using 3:2 pulldown conversion, which eliminates any uneven motion in action scenes.
The internal stereo system produces a total of 30 watts of audio output. The system can simulate surround sound, and automatic volume control will maintain a steady audio level during programs and commercials. A broad range of convenience features are built into the HL-R6168W, including an interesting on/off melody, a choice of audio and video presets, a digital HD signal-strength meter, favorite channel memory, channel and input labeling, and access to the TV Guide On-Screen Interactive Program Guide. Twin tuners deliver a range of PIP options, including viewing two standard-definition programs at once or using an input source for the PIP window.
The rear-panel connectivity options are extensive on the HL-R6168W, and they include two RF inputs, two composite video/S-video inputs, two component video inputs, two HDMI inputs with DVI audio, PC audio and video inputs, a CableCARD slot, an optical digital audio output, an AnyNet connection, two FireWire (IEEE 1394) connections, a subwoofer output, and a G-Link connector for an IR controller. The handy and capable universal remote control can operate a cable box, DVD player, VCR, and another device.
