Samsung's 61-inch HL-R6167W is a joy to view, and it comes at a very reasonable price (relatively speaking, of course). The screen is bordered in black, with a compact design that includes bottom speakers, side inputs and controls, and a slim cabinet that will fit easily on a counter or shelf.

In addition to the analog NTSC tuner, the HL-R6167W has an integrated ATSC tuner that delivers full high-definition content from over-the-air broadcasts and other sources. The picture appears lively and sharp, with clean edges and very clear detail, and the contrast ratio goes up to 2,500:1.

A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter eliminates dot crawl and rainbow effects, and the DLP picture never needs to be adjusted for convergence errors. All types of content are displayed at 720p, and the picture is not subject to image burn-in or ghosting.

The internal stereo system features twin stereo speakers rated at 15 watts of audio output per channel. The audio can simulate surround sound, and volume is automatically controlled to reduce the blare of commercials to program levels.

Equipped with twin tuners, the HL-R6167W can present a split screen with two full-height images, and it's possible to freeze the on-screen image to half the screen.

Other convenience features include access to TV Guide On-Screen for selecting viewing choices, channel and video input labeling, a low-noise amplifier to improve reception on certain weak stations, and a signal strength meter for use in tuning in digital channels.

The inputs are quite generous on the HL-R6167W, and they include three audio/video inputs (one on the side), three S-video inputs (one side), two component video inputs, one HDMI interface, one PC input with audio, two IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interfaces, one AnyNet mini jack for use with other Samsung components, two RF inputs, and an optical digital audio output. The universal remote control has a slide panel at the base containing some less frequently used buttons and DVD/VCR controls.
