Samsung's HL-R5087W is a 50-inch HDTV with a stunning pedestal design, slim DLP monitor, and top performance.

The wide-format screen is set into a silver and black cabinet with side stereo speakers, all supported by a tall silver column that contains touch-sensitive control buttons that glow blue when activated. A triangular base supports the pedestal and provides visual balance while eliminating the need for a separate stand.

The flat screen displays digital and analog content at 1,280X720p, with a 2,500:1 contrast ratio. The presence of NTSC and ATSC tuners makes it possible to view standard or high-definition content without any additional receivers. This set also has a CableCARD slot, so cable users can potentially eliminate the cable box as well. The DLP technology of the HL-R5087W requires no convergence tuning or noisy fan, and there is never an issue with screen burn-in or aging.

The internal audio is a 30-watt speaker system that can simulate surround sound and produce a full, detailed audio experience. Automatic volume control is available through the menu system.

Convenience features include an adjustable sleep timer, memory for favorite channels, picture-in-picture viewing, picture freeze, channel and video input labeling, and a low-noise amplifier for use when the incoming signal is weak.

The universal remote control is a slender silver unit with a slide panel at the base covering some of the less frequently used buttons.

The bottom line on the picture is that colors are rich and lifelike, and edges are very sharp. The Samsung HL-R5087W's film mode utilizes 3:2 pulldown conversion to eliminate the uneven motion in fast action scenes, making the set a nice center of a home theater.
