Samsung DVD-V2500

Date Published: 1/9/08

The Samsung DVD-V2500 is a high-end DVD/VCR combo, packed with features and capable of delivering a quality picture in DVD and VCR mode. The DVD-V2500 incorporates a Memory Stick port that can read MP3 or JPEG files from digital memory cards, letting you create a digital jukebox or photo slideshow.

The DVD player has a component video output that switches between interlaced and progressive-scan operation, depending on whether you're using the deck in conjunction with an analog or digital TV. The player handles just about every format disc thrown at it, including DVD-R, CD, CD-R/RW, MP3 CD, HDCD, and VCD. The picture quality from the progressive scan output is extremely impressive, rivaling that of far more expensive, single-function DVD players. There were no artifacts visible on playback, images appeared clear and sharp and the colors were well saturated and true-to-life. The DVD player also features 3:2 pulldown compensation, zoom function and screen fit mode to eliminate the black bars from letterboxed movies.

The DVD-V2500 switches from DVD player to VHS Hi-Fi Stereo CR via controls on the front panel or the remote. The two functions cannot operate simultaneously beyond allowing you to watch a DVD while the VCR continues to record. However, the unit cannot copy protected DVD content to VHS tape. The VCR has a four-head system for recording and playback and performs as well as any stand-alone budget VCR.

The still-picture playback works equally well, allowing you to view digital stills from either CD-ROM or Memory Stick. Images can then be rotated, zoomed in and out on, or manipulated with filters such as black-and-white, sepia, image-negative, or three levels of picture softening. The Samsung DVD-V2500 would be worth recommending as just a progressive-scan DVD player. The addition of a VCR and Memory Stick port make it a Best Buy.
