Samsung DVD-R155
Date Published: 5/1/08Take a glance at the feature specifications offered by the Samsung DVD-R155 DVD recorder, and you'd be convinced that it offers excellent value for money. Unfortunately, some performance issues hamper this unit and prevent us from rating it much higher.
The entry level model in Samsung's latest range of DVD recorders, the DVD-R155 offers multi-format recording and playback along with an HDMI connection and 1080i upconversion. The HDMI connection will hook the DVD recorder to your home entertainment setup with a single cable for lossless video and audio transfer. Standard 480i and 480p resolution disc can then be viewed at 720p or 1080i, depending on the resolution of your HDTV.
The unit records to a choice of DVD-R or DVD-RW format discs, including dual-layer DVD-R. At the lowest quality setting, a dual layer DVD-R will let you record more than 14 hours of programming. Unfortunately, we detected some compatibility bugs with the DVD-R155. It struggled to load some budget brand blank discs, so we'd recommend only using name brand media with this DVD recorder. More troubling was when the unit struggled to play back discs that worked perfectly OK in other players. If you have a number of slightly scratched or otherwise less than perfect discs, we would recommend against the Samsung DVD-R155.
On the positive side, we liked the convenience of the EZ Record function that has the DVD-R155 recording just one second after pressing the record button, so you'll never miss the start of your favorite TV show waiting for the machine to power up. This DVD recorder does not offer an integrated tuner, however.
The DVD-R155 is simple enough to use. The menu system is basic, as you would expect from an entry-level DVD recorder, but intuitive and easy to navigate. The inclusion of a front DV connection makes it quick and convenient to hook up a DV camcorder and transfer your home movies to disc for long term storage. The included full-feature remote control is equally user friendly. Despite the impressive feature set for an entry level DVD recorder, we found the Samsung DVD-R155 lacked a consistent, high level of performance.
Pros: HDMI upscaling to high definition 720p and 1080i, DivX compatible
Cons: Patchy performance
