Salton Mini Chopper MJCH100B

Date Published: 4/24/07

The Salton Mini Chopper MJCH100B is a powerful, practical addition to any kitchen. The compact motor base houses a 240-watt motor, capable of chopping, grinding or pureeing a variety of produce items. This unit also has a handy whisk attachment, which enables it to emulsify foods such as mayonnaise, and whisk small amounts of cream or egg whites. Two small holes in the lid let you add small quantities of liquid while processing.

Standard equipment for the MJCH100B includes a black power base, clear 21-ounce work bowl with cover, stainless-steel chopping blade, whisk attachment, and plastic storage lid. A generous 57-inch extension cord wraps around the base for concealed storage.

There are three soft-touch push-button controls: Chop, Grind and Whisk. The chop and grind buttons are pulse-action buttons, which activate the motor in short bursts and stop once the button is released. The whisk button can be used for either pulse or continuous processing. A unique feature of the Salton MJCH100B is the auto-reverse function, which is listed on the outer packaging but not mentioned in the instruction booklet. We suspect that the chopping blade will reverse its direction if food becomes jammed. Try as we might, however, we could not get food to jam in this unit, so we were not able to see this feature in action.

We were pleasantly surprised at the nice volume and texture we achieved with the whisk attachment. Two egg whites (the recommended maximum quantity) were frothy after the first 10 seconds and held soft mounds after several continuous intervals totaling about 1 minute. The chopper is a bit noisy, especially when using the highest speeds (whisk or grind).

For its small size, the Salton Mini Chopper MJCH100B packs a wallop. The true test of a mini chopper, in our opinion, is chopping onions, a task that is time consuming and tedious by hand. The Salton mini chopper passed the test with flying colors, delivering beautifully chopped pieces in about 8 pulses.

Pros: Powerful 240-watt motor, 3-speed operation, 21-ounce work bowl, bonus whisk attachment
Cons: Noisy
