Ryobi 12-Volt Compact Cordless Drill HJP001K

Date Published: 5/19/08

With a price of only $79, the variable speed Ryobi 12-Volt Compact Cordless Drill HJP001K is one heck of a product for the price. The drill kit comes with two Lithium-Ion batteries that have a quick recharge time of only 40 minutes so you always have the power you need to complete the job at hand. Two easy-read indicators on the smart charger gives you a heads-up on the battery status. The kit also comes with one double-ended bit. Also included is a tool bag that's as sturdy as it is attractive.

The best part is the way this economically priced tool handles and performs, which is why we awarded the HJP001K compact drill a Budget Buy designation. We like its compact size and found it to be easy to handle and easy to maneuver in tight spaces. Weighing in at a mere 2.2 pounds with battery pack intact, this drill is so lightweight that we didn't encounter any user fatigue when using the tool. And the ergonomic handle with overmold ensures added user comfort for a difference we noticed the minute we picked it up in our hand.

As to its performance, well, let's just say we were especially impressed given its size. Sinking screws is no problem, the variable speed trigger is smooth and very responsive, and the batteries hold a charge for a long time. Drill and driver bit changes are quick and easy due to a 3/8-inch heavy-duty keyless chuck. One thing that's lacking is an adjustable clutch, which is why it scored a 4 in performance rather than a 5. Even still, this tool is a no brainer when it comes to a great value for the price.

If you're looking for a great value and optimal performance in a compact size, the Ryobi 12-volt Lithium-Ion Drill Kit HJP001K is the one to beat.

Pros: Two Lithium-Ion batteries that recharge in only 40 minutes, compact and lightweight design, easy on/off battery pack, variable speed, keyless chuck, powerful enough for most drilling and screwdriving tasks, on-board magnetic tray
Cons: No adjustable clutch, no onboard work light

Warranty
2 years, limited
