RIM BlackBerry Curve 8310 SmartPhone
Date Published: 9/27/07The RIM BlackBerry Curve is yet another offering from the leader in messaging devices. And, as with all BlackBerry offerings, it is the incomparable quality of the messaging features that will maintain devout loyalty. Exceptional detail is paid to the spacing and usability of the QWERTY keyboard, making for a very smooth typing experience. Meanwhile, the Curve is one of the lightest BlackBerrys (just under 4 ounces) and has a small form factor that is very comfortable to grip. When you combine all of this with the very helpful spell checker (great for writing e-mails and documents), the Curve will be irreplaceable for professionals chained to their e-mail. Up to 10 e-mail accounts can be managed simultaneously, all of which receive messages immediately, in real time.
Ergonomic praise aside, the Curve does have its problems. Internet access is granted by the outdated EDGE network, and Wi-Fi connectivity is not available. That said, the Curve manages to operate simultaneous applications with little sluggishness, but you'll definitely be waiting for web pages to load. In the meantime, the 2.5-inch screen offers 65K colors that are conveniently dimmed according to lighting conditions, and the volume for calls can also automatically adjust to ambient noise level.
The phone itself offers reasonably good call clarity on the quad-band GSM networks (850/900/1800/1900). And a decent music player allows you to play songs over the speakers or your own headphones (a 3.5mm jack is on the side of the unit). Files are accessed from the 64 MB of internal memory or from a microSD card. Photos can also be stored in these places and are taken with a disappointing 2-megapixel camera with 5x zoom and flash. There are no video capabilities.
Talk time is roughly four hours and standby is around 17 days before recharging is required. Other features include: speakerphone, voice dialing, camera flash, wired stereo headset, Bluetooth, photo ID, distinctive ringers and mini-USB port. Overall, the Curve provides the exceptional performance expected from BlackBerry with an improved compact design.
Pros: great QWERTY keyboard, lightweight, spell check, push e-mail
Cons: EDGE network, disappointing camera, no Wi-Fi
