RIM Blackberry 8800 GSM Mobile Phone

Date Published: 7/5/07

The RIM Blackberry 8800 Mobile Phone offers some handy new features along with the usual excellence in e-mail access. Though most people buy Blackberries for their push email and easy-to-type keyboards, the 8800 now offers higher end features such as push-to-talk (or walkie-talkie) communication (depending on carrier), making it easier to stay connected with friends on trips and outings. When activated, you can see who is available at a glance and can even set up groups for multiple participants. Another handy addition for the frequent traveler is the internal GPS locator, providing maps and voice-guided directions to the owner's phone for a small monthly fee.

In deference to security precautions at many companies, the 8800 does not have a built-in camera. But if you download pictures or video through the EDGE network or Bluetooth, they look great on the 2.5-inch 65K-color LCD. This screen automatically dims or brightens depending on the conditions and will also display song information for the MP3 player, which is fairly basic in its performance. Files can be stored in the 64MB internal memory, or on a microSD card. Unfortunately, you cannot access Wi-Fi networks, but you do have wireless connectivity through Bluetooth.

Instead of the usual jog wheel, the newer trackball is located in the center of the phone and provides very good navigation of menus. Meanwhile, Blackberry's QWERTY keyboard is the usual success in design and usability. Up to ten e-mail accounts are supported.

Call quality for the 8800 is acceptable, though not stellar, but the very impressive battery can go for over two weeks on standby and about five hours for talk time. Other features include: voice-activated dialing, photo ID, and an excellent speakerphone. Overall, this is a great model for Blackberry enthusiasts who want some additional functionality.

Pros: trackball navigation, great QWERTY keyboard, push e-mail, push-to-talk communication (varies with carrier), GPS locator, vibrant screen
Cons: no Wi-Fi, so-so call quality
