Ridgid R888 Dual Voltage Hand Planer
Date Published: 10/14/07
The R888 Dual Voltage Hand Planer comes with several surprising features, starting with Ridgid's Max Select system that allows it to run on 24-volt and 18-volt batteries (both sold separately). The 24-volt power platform features a 3.0-amp-hour lithium-ion battery for longer, fade-free run times at a no-load speed of 13,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). The 18-volt, 2.5-amp-hour Ni-Cad battery charges in just 30 minutes, and Ridgid claims that it is the most powerful 18-volt Ni-Cad battery in the industry, with a no-load speed of 11,000 rpm.
One of the most impressive features is the replaceable planing blade, which is attached to a cylinder-shaped blade holder for a spiral-cut action that lets you shear end grain into feathery wisps. The performance is smooth, with nice even planing that lacks the wavy surface left by other tools with choppy bites. The R888's depth adjustment only goes from 0 to 1/16 inches, although the micro-settings allow for finer depth control. We do like that Ridgid places the depth adjuster separate from the R888's front grip.
A removable edge guide is included for planing edges and making rabbet cuts up to 1/2 inches deep. The R888 is belt-driven, resulting in a low, smooth sound for quieter operation, a much-appreciated feature in a power tool. Another handy addition is the automatic rear stand. This spring-assisted footrest allows the planer to sit on surfaces without damaging the surface or blade. A standard vacuum port with a large chip collection bag works great to keep your work area clean, although there is still a small amount of side discharge. The safety switch location can also be a bit hard to operate if you have smaller hands. After all, DIYers and professionals come in all sizes.
The R888 package includes a blade set, edge/rabbet guide, dust bag and a wrench for easy blade changes. Overall, the Ridgid R888 Dual Voltage Hand Planer is a useful tool to have in your workshop.
