Ridgid 10-Inch Compound Miter Saw MS1065LZ
Date Published: 6/3/08
Compound miter saws, once only found on construction sites, have become popular with do-it-yourself homeowners of all stripes. They are arguably safer and easier for the novice to use than table saws, don’t take up as much space, cost less, and allow users to perform most common cutting chores. While not nearly as versatile as a stationary or bench top table saw (no ripping, deep cross cuts, rabbet or dado cuts), miter saws have their place--especially for those who often find themselves needing to make repetitive, production-style cuts such as when framing or doing trim work. Designed with the pro in mind, Ridgid’s 10-Inch Compound Miter Saw MS1065LZ will also appeal to homeowners who are interested in quality tools. The unit we tried was one of the first to boast a laser guide for making perfectly accurate cuts. The laser is attached to the arbor and, as such, is unaffected by blade width. The laser is blade-activated, so there’s no need to remember to turn it on or off. The saw is extremely capable, as well. Powered by a 15-amp motor, it can handle cross cuts in nominal 2x6s and 4x4s. Adjustments are easy with convenient bevel stops and tool-less overrides. The bevel and miter ranges are generous, with the former going from 0 to 47 degrees and the latter from 0 to 50 degrees. Other features include an arbor lock that eases blade changes, a blade brake for safety and work speed, an extra tall left-side table extension that provides good support and slides out of the way when necessary, and a table clamp that holds the work piece securely against the table extension while making cuts. If you’re looking for bigger cutting capacities, Ridgid offers a 12-inch compound miter saw and a 12-inch sliding compound miter saw. By comparison, the latter can cross cut 2x12s. All units come with a table extension, carbide tipped blade, dust bag, dust guide, work clamp, an wrench.
