Revell VEXplorer

The Revell VEXplorer is a radio-control robotic construction system with enough configurations to satisfy even Mensa-minded junior engineers. The VEXplorer comes with preassembled modules that allow you to create a robot in less than an hour. Talk about instant gratification! The mechanical and electronic modules can be combined to make a remote control robot that rolls, shoots video and retrieves objects.
Once your child has mastered the preassembled version, the VEXplorer's modules break down into 300 pieces that can be combined in a variety of ways to fuel the imagination. The components include a spy cam, claw, arm, all-terrain tires, a controller and more. We like the remote-control system, which lets you move the gear-driven VEXplorer arm and claw, as well as the VEXplorer itself. The VEXplorer's wireless color video system with sound has a range of about 150 feet, and you can even connect it to your TV for a bigger-than-life view of the action.
Overall, the VEXplorer is an impressive robotic system that is challenging enough for any kid to enjoy, without becoming frustrating. In fact, the system is used in many school robotics competitions around the world. The VEXplorer kit also includes a DVD that guides the design of additional robotic configurations using software called SolidWorks. Unfortunately, the DVD is only a 150-day trial version. We think that if one is going to pay about $200 for an educational toy, the bonus software should be included.
Nevertheless, we like the option to order replacement parts, expansion components and accessories from VEX Robotics Systems, which makes the VEXplorer an ideal starter kit for young engineers. The Revell VEXplorer is one educational toy that not only fuels the imagination, but can inspire inventive learning.
Pros: Preassembled modules, remote control, spy cam
Cons: DVD software is a 150-day trial
