The ReplayTV RTV5516 is a digital video recorder that allows you to record and store an incredible 160 hours of TV programming on its 160GB hard drive. The RTV5516 also incorporates a built-in Ethernet port that enables you to connect the unit to a PC or other ReplayTV units in your home. If the hard drive on one player runs out of space, the recorder will automatically assign recordings to another networked unit. This room-to-room streaming also enables you to watch the start of a TV show in one room and then finish watching the show on a ReplayTV unit in the bedroom. You can even transfer digital photos from a PC to the DVR and create a slideshow on your TV.

Playback options include the ability to pause live TV, replay a scene in slow motion, skip through commercials at 30-second increments, and instantly playback the last 7 seconds. This is a handy feature for catching a snippet of missed dialogue in a movie or for replaying a great move or disputed call in a sports event. The RTV5516 also offers a number of slow-motion and fast-forward effects, as well as a progressive scan output for seamless displays on a digital TV. Among the advanced DVR features is the MyReplayTV function, which allows the RTV5516 to be programmed remotely via the internet. For example, if you are unexpectedly working late, you can simply log on from your PC in the office and program the RTV5516 to record the favorite show that you'd otherwise miss.

The RTV5516 connects to the ReplayTV service at night via a phone line or broadband connection and downloads channel guide information. Once the information is downloaded, the RTV5516 enables you to use keywords to search for programs with a specific content or theme. A subscription to the ReplayTV service runs at either $12.95 per month or a one-off lifetime fee of $299. ReplayTV also offers a discounted rate of $6.95 per month if you have more than one unit activated in your home.
