Remington BS1812A cordless string trimmer
Date Published: 3/12/08
The Remington BS1812A 18-volt cordless string trimmer offers versatility and performance in a sleek, ergonomic design. We like that it quickly converts into an edger; just grip the shaft collar and rotate the motor housing. In seconds, you're all set to edge sidewalks, flowerbeds and other areas that need the finishing touch of a well-manicured edge.
Edging components include a smooth-running edging wheel that is attached to the cutting guard. The BS1812A's telescoping aluminum shaft is easily adjusted to accommodate the height of the user; you simply need to grip the shaft collar, rotate the motor housing about halfway between the trimming position and edging position, and then slide the shaft to the desired location. We like that both edging and shaft adjustments are simplified in one easy process.
Another impressive feature is Remington's interchangeable nickel-cadmium battery pack, which can be used with all Remington cordless products. Having one battery platform that can operate a number of tools requires less storage space and simply makes good sense.
Additionally, we incurred relatively little fatigue when using this unit due to its slight weight, ease of operation, cushioned handles and custom-sized fit. And what a difference 9,600rpm can make in cutting performance, especially on a single-line feed system.
The front handle is adjustable by loosening a knob, though we did find this handle to be hard to adjust. You just cannot adjust the handle by loosening a knob and sliding it on the pole; instead, you need to remove the bolt, reposition the handle to where it's most comfortable for you and then tighten the bolt back in place. But that's a minor inconvenience when stacked against everything that this machine has going for it.
For everyday trimming and edging tasks, the Remington BS1812A cordless string trimmer/edger gets two green thumbs up from us for its versatility, performance and easy handling.
