REI Taj 3 three-season/convertible tent
Date Published: 2/8/07
The REI Taj 3 is a three-season/convertible tent that is designed to hold three people, or two people and extra gear. The REI Taj 3 tent uses an asymmetrical "Combi" three-pole design that maximizes interior volume while providing good structural integrity.
The Taj 3 tent is secured to the frame using clips, and for ventilation and visibility, it features mesh doors, a mesh window and mesh ceiling panels. The doors are somewhat larger than usual, for easier entry and exit. The polyester fly is cut to provide two large vestibule areas for storing gear; it also offers a top vent and a clear film window.
As with most three-season/convertible tents, the fly provides waterproof performance, with leak-proof construction at guy-out points and zippers. Floor seams are factory taped for waterproofing. There are three interior pockets for stashing small items. Other perks include reflective zipper pulls and guylines, and ladder-loc tie-downs securing the rainfly to the Taj 3 tent. A footprint is sold separately.
In good weather, the Taj 3 tent can be pitched using only the rainfly, poles and a footprint. This tent comes with stakes, pole repair tube, guylines and tighteners, pole and stake sacks, and compression sack. It also comes in a golden/earth color.
The REI Taj 3 is a notable three-season/convertible tent because of its roomy interior volume, achieved at a relatively light weight, without sacrificing sturdiness. This is a worthy all-around backpacking tent for two or three people who want to get good use out of their tent.
Pros: Window in the vestibule brightens rainy days
Cons: Added features also add weight
