REI Half Dome 2 HC tent
Date Published: 3/12/07
The REI Half Dome 2 HC is a three-season tent, and an update of REI's most popular two-person tent. The Half Dome was an extremely popular tent that provided excellent value, and the HC carries on that tradition.
The Half Dome 2 HC three-season tent uses an innovative pole and hub design to provide relatively more interior volume and increased rigidity, while promoting easy set-up. In this design, poles stay attached to a hub, the canopy is attached to the center of the hub, and poles are added at the corners. The corner poles are designed to flex outward, to provide somewhat more interior space at shoulder level. The DAC Featherlite aluminum poles use locking pole tips for secure set-up, and clip to the canopy; the shockcorded poles break down into nine short sections.
The Half Dome 2 HC 3-season tent has two D-shaped doors, each with a vestibule, and a mesh panel. In addition, there are mesh panels on the front and rear walls, allowing cross ventilation to reduce condensation. The full-coverage rainfly is factory sealed and UV resistant, and has two roof vents and a clear film window. The fly is designed to prevent water from entering at the guy-out points and zippers, and the tent floor uses factory-taped seams. For safety, the guy-out points are reflective. Inside, there are four pockets, and an attic is included as well. The HC uses a golden/earth color scheme. The Half Dome 2 HC three-season tent includes guylines and tighteners, stakes, pole repair sleeve, pole and stake bags, and compression sack. A foot print is sold separately.
The Half Dome 2 HC three-season tent is a lot of tent for a little money. It provides the interior volume, a well as perks such as double doors and vestibules, to keep two campers happy. Throw in REI's renowned return policy, and you have a winner.
Pros: Very good value in a 3-season tent
Cons: Relatively heavy, and may lack some durability of more expensive tents
