REI Geo Mountain 3 four-season/mountaineering tent
Date Published: 6/22/06
The REI Geo Mountain 3 is a four season/ mountaineering tent designed to shelter three people under the toughest conditions. As with most four season/ mountaineering tents, the Geo uses very rugged construction to add strength; however, this incurs a weight penalty. The Geo 3 is an update on an older design; this new version has a lower peak height that helps the tent withstand higher wind velocities. The lower height also reduces weight by 4 ounces. In addition, the vestibules were redesigned for greater wind resistance (tested to 71 mph front and rear).
Like most mountaineering tents, this one has a geodesic design, meaning it uses poles that cross in various places to evenly distribute tension across the frame. The Geo 3 uses four poles plus a vestibule pole. The canopy is held by a combination of pole clips and pole sleeves on top, which helps to give the tent more height. The full-coverage rainfly helps keep rain, snow and harmful U/V rays off of the tent top.
Two peak vents assist in ventilation to reduce condensation; they are held by wire supports and can be opened and closed from the inside. The tent interior is accessible via front and rear doors, each with its own vestibule. The tent is also fitted with front and rear windows.
Other features include factory taped floor seams, color-coded rainfly corners to assist setup, water resistant guy-out points and zippers, reflective guy points and zipper pulls, interior pockets, mesh attic, and hang loops. The Geo 3 is supplied with guy lines and tighteners, stakes, pole repair kit, pole and stake bags, and compression stuff sack.
The Geo 3 is a very cost-effective four season/mountaineering tent that is well built and provides excellent value for the money. You could take it to any extreme environment and deploy it with confidence.
