RC Helicopters

Date Published: 03/21/2008

RC helicopters are a fun and exciting way for children to learn about the physics of flight. Invented in 1980, RC helicopters have come a long way since they first hit the market. Original models were made of metal and needed to be connected to a battery pack with an electrical cable. None of the first models were practical for indoor use and often had problems with parts breaking. Another drawback to the first RC helicopters was that they had to be assembled by hand, making them less kid-friendly than their current counterparts. Advances in technology have helped move RC helicopters out of these primitive stages.

Today’s RC helicopters can be used by children and adults of all ages. Modern RC helicopters can run for hours on wireless, independent battery units, as well as be used both indoors and outdoors. They can range in size from several feet long to models that fit in the palm of your hand. Larger models can fly as high as 900 feet, while smaller models, such as Discovery’s Radio Controlled Micro Mosquito Helicopter, are perfect for annoying family members around the house. There are also many build-it-yourself RC helicopter kits available for advanced enthusiasts. Some consumers are intimidated by build-it-yourself RC helicopters because they don’t know a lot about wiring and motors, so make sure that you’re up to the challenge before purchasing such a model.

RC helicopters operate by the same basic principles as full-size helicopters. They use a main rotor blade for lift and a tail rotor blade to steer. Always use the perspective of the nose to fly your RC helicopter. Many people get distracted by what the tail is doing, but rest assured, the RC helicopter will fly in the direction the nose is pointing. Novice users should look into RC helicopters with fixed pitch blades as opposed to collective pitch blades. Fixed pitch blades do not pivot along their longitudinal axis as opposed to collective pitch blades which allow for each main rotor blade’s pitch to be adjusted. While fixed pitch RC helicopters are not as responsive in the air as other models, they are easier to master than models with collective pitch blades.

Modern RC helicopters, such as the Discovery Command Force Comanche Chopper, can be used to teach children about throttle and pitch control. Learning aside, safety should be your number one concern when playing with RC helicopters. You should never fly RC helicopters in the vicinity of other people and always take into account the space you have available for operating your RC helicopter, otherwise you’ll find yourself preparing for a crash landing.
