Proctor Silex 1.5-Quart Slow Cooker 33015

Date Published: 2/20/08

The Proctor Silex 1.5-Quart Slow Cooker 33015 is a small-capacity unit that is perfect for preparing one- or two-person meals, side dishes or appetizers. The slow, steady heat, delivered through the unit's sides, cooks foods at a low temperature for all-day hands-free convenience.

Even with its small capacity, the Proctor Silex Slow Cooker does not skimp on features. It has a removable stoneware crock and a four-position dial with settings for High, Low, Keep Warm and Off. The combination of an all-white housing and white crockery liner provides a bright clean countertop presence.

This unit is extremely easy to use. Just add ingredients and set the dial to Low for all day cooking or to High if you need your meal to be ready sooner. Cooking on High shortens the cooking time by almost one-half in most cases.

This little cooker is a real space-saver, measuring just 7 inches in diameter. And, while it can't hold a whole chicken or roast, it can accommodate cut-up chicken pieces, cubed beef or ham. It is perfect for making a morning batch of oatmeal, or a small amount (up to 4 cups) of soup or chili. Meals containing raw meat and/or vegetables take at least 8 hours on the low setting or about 5 hours on High. It's also the ideal size for a chocolate or cheese fondue.

The four-position dial clicks at each setting. As with other non-digital models, we noticed there is no indicator light, which makes it difficult to tell that the unit is on, unless you examine it at close range. We liked the fact that there is a Keep Warm setting on this otherwise basic model. This lets you prepare a meal ahead of time and retain an ideal serving temperature.

The unit's metal exterior does get quite warm but the base has two stay-cool side handles that let you lift or move the cooker safely. The glass cover nests atop the crock, forming a loose seal that keeps most heat in but still allows any residual steam to escape.

The removable crock (with its lid removed) is also microwave and oven safe.

Pros: Removable crock, Keep Warm setting
Cons: Limited capacity, no indicator light
