Precor 9.27

Date Published: 1/31/08

The Precor 9.27 is a step up from the company's entry-level home treadmill, the 9.23, and while the build quality and performance of this treadmill is excellent, other machines are better values.

The 3hp continuous-duty motor has a maximum speed of 12mph and is adjustable at 0.5mph increments; this is sufficient for interval training, even for serious athletes. The running surface measures 20X57 inches and the cushioning feels like health club-quality; dubbed the Ground Effects Impact Control System by Precor, it offers a stable and comfortable workout, whether you're walking or running on the flat or at an incline. The 9.27 adjusts to a maximum 15-percent incline.

This unit offers a solid selection of workout programs, including two heart rate programs, two walking workouts, a 5k track run, a fun run, hill climb, interval training, manual and a weight loss program. We like the handy QuickStart feature as well as the touch-sensitive console. The 9.27 displays workout feedback including speed, incline, time, calories burned, distance, heart rate, pace, profile and SmartRate, which is a Precor feature that tracks heart rate in relation to target zones for either fat burning or cardio training. Heart rate is monitored via a wireless chest strap, and this treadmill also includes a safety clip that quickly and safely stops the machine in an emergency.

As you would expect from a Precor treadmill, the 9.27 carries a lifetime warranty on the frame and welds, ten years on the parts and wear items and a one-year warranty for labor. The unit offers few additional convenience features beyond an accessory rack for holding a water bottle and MP3 player, but the reason for buying a Precor is for its excellent performance and reliable construction rather than its flashy extras. Despite the obvious quality of this product, its high price means that the Precor 9.27 does not provide the best value among treadmills that we've seen.

Pros: Powerful motor, wide running belt, excellent cushioning, high-quality performance
Cons: Expensive, limited features
