Porter-Cable Router 893PK

Date Published: 4/29/04

Porter-Cable's 893PK router kit comes with a powerful 12-amp motor and two bases, fixed- and plunge-type. The fixed base is generally preferred for trimming laminate, shaping moldings, and cutting rabbet, dados, and grooves, while the plunge base facilitates internal cuts for lettering, mortising, and inlay work. The plunge base also facilitates table-mounted router applications.

Electronic feedback maintains constant rpm as you work despite load changes. The unit has other thoughtful features. The on/off switch, located on the side of the motor, allows you to turn off the motor without moving your hand off the tool. A second, topside switch is positioned in such a way that it is off when the unit is rested on its head for bit changing. The clear bases allow for good visibility.

When using the fixed base, a macro-height lever allows you to quickly release the motor and to make coarse bit depth adjustments. Fine adjustments to 1/128 inch can be made with the height adjustment knob. The plunge base boasts a stop turret that thumb-rotates to set at three different adjustable stops (or the sub base). The micro-depth stop is finger adjustable. The plunge action is fluid thanks to the base's brass bushings.

In either mode, an auto engaging spindle lock allows for one-wrench bit changes, even with the unit mounted under a router table. We found this feature to be a little troublesome and prefer to either remove the motor and press the spindle lock with my thumb, or to use two wrenches to make bit changes.

When using the fixed base, dust collection requires the purchase of Porter-Cable's "Gripvac" accessory (8911). Dust is collected through a pistol-type handle that replaces one of the knob-style handles. Standard with the unit are self-releasing 1/4- and 1/2-inch collets, wrench, two bases, an interactive CD-ROM, and stackable carry cases for each base. The stackable carry cases convert to neat router pedestals with loads of accessory storage.

Like other models in Porter-Cable 890 series, the 893PK's motor has "soft start" circuitry that eliminates sudden jerks at start-up. We couldn't feel the slightest tug, even with the variable speed selector set at the highest rpm.
